Cyprus, in a bid to leave their mark on the country’s Presidency of the Council of the EU 2012 starting in July, have planned an exhibition presenting works of El Greco for this October.
The Leventeion Municipal Museum, situated in Nicosia, will host the exhibition titled “Domenicos Theotokopoulos: From Handaka to Toledo – a European Route.” The Cypriot audience will have the chance to admire some of the most significant works of the great Greek painter.
These paintings depict every feature of El Greco, from his early life to Venetian-occupied Crete, the period during which he was taught hagiography, his life in Venice, where he met and was influenced by the greatest painters of Italian Art and became a student of Titian, until his move to Toledo. During his stay in the Spanish city, El Greco completed some of his most famous works and got recognized as one of the greatest painters of his era.
In total, seven works of Theotokopoulos, displayed at London – and Athens-based Museums, including “The Adoration of the Magi” of the Benaki Museum, will be presented. The exhibition will begin in early October and will be open for two months. It will also include texts and audiovisual material to provide visitors with a great variety of information on the paintings.
Director of the Leventeion Museum, Loukia Loizou-Hadjigavriel, said that “during the Cyprus presidency in the EU, it is important to show the European course of a neighboring painter.”
