British BFI – England’s most important cinematographic organization – has planned a feature on ancient Greek tragedies. This June, BFI will present 10 ancient tragedies shooted by some English TV producers from the late 1950s through 1990.
All these movies have the special characteristic that most people do not usually have the chance to watch, such as “Electra” by Sophocles, directed by Greek theatre director Dimitris Rontiris and recorded by BBC channel in 1962. It is worth mentioning that in this film, actors Aspasia Papathanassiou (as Electra), Georges Sarris (as Klytemnistra), Emilios Veakis (as Orestis) and many more play in Greek, without subtitles available for the movie.
Besides “Electra,” the British feature will also present “Oedipus Tyrannus” by Sophocles as well, a production of Britain’s “Open University (1977)” starring Patrick Stewart, “Iphigenia in Avlida” by Evripidis, a movie directed by Don Taylor in 1990, with Fiona Shaw playing Clytemnestra. Another movie included in the program will also be ne part of the trilogy called “Orestia” by Eschyle (1983), directed by Peter Hall starring masked actors. The event will be presented June 7-26.
