A strong earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale occurred in the sea area off the island of Crete, the second within the last 24 hours. The earthquake occurred at 03.33 am in the sea area 83 km off Iraklio, 247 km South-Southeast of Greece’s capital Athens. In the same area where an earthquake of 5.3R had occurred in early morning hours of Thursday. According to the Institute of Geodynamics, the national Observatory of Athens and the Geophysical Laboratory of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the earthquake is been considered as ‘strong’ and it occurred in a depth of 14.2 km. The region records a strong seismic activity within the last 24 hours, with earthquakes of 2.2-3,9R.
Gerasimos Papadopoulos, research director of Geodynamics Institute, spoke of the possible phenomenon of “Twin Earthquakes” and said there is no correlation with the seismic activities on Santorini. On Jan 23, 2012 some 20 minor earthquakes had occurred on the island of Santorini, in the north of the sea area where the Crete earthquakes occured.
The two earthquakes of Jan 26th and Jan 27th, 2012 are being considered as ‘main earthquakes”

Two People Slightly Injured
Two people suffered minor injuries in the areas of Timbaki and Chania. A woman, 65, broke her leg as she was trying to leave her house in panic. A man, 34, fell off his bed as the earthquake woke him up with a sudden shutter.
No other injuries have been reported.
