Returns to Greece to Open the Case

Matthew Cryer was a 17-year-old British tourist who died almost four years ago on Zante island. Back then, Greek authorities concluded that the young man had died due to excessive consumption of alcohol. However, some months later in 2009 a UK-based coroner reversed these results and concluded that Matthew in fact had been murdered.
According to the coroner, the boy had suffered 20 injuries including head wounds and bruising. Eye-witness accounts recently revealed that bouncers at the nightclub had pushed him down the stairs and attacked him. But at the time of the incident, theyhad been intimidated by the bouncers not to testify.
Back then, the police officers announced that Matthew Cryer, who was on holiday with friends in the resort of Laganas, was found lying in the street outside the Cocktails and Dreams nightclub. He died some time later in hospital, as a result of cardiac attack caused by drinking, as the Greek authorities claimed.
Despite the evidence the boy’s family submitted to Greek authorities two years ago, it was only recently that Matthew’s father was allowed to meet with Greek magistrates on Zante.

David and Maria Cryer have arranged a meeting with a Greek prosecutor on Wednesday, June 13, to present this inquest, along with two witnesses to the events and a Derbyshire Constabulary officer.
In the summer of 2008, Greece and the UK heard the shocking news and even the Greek Prime Minister sent a letter to the parents to express his sympathy over their son’s death, but the authorities have not examined the evidence since then.
