….and Merkel is just another unprincipled dictator making it up as she goes along
For the last four years, the last thing Europe has been is united.
Gradually over that time – and now disturbingly quickly – the main
players in the EU have started reverting to national stereotype. The
British want to be in, out, and shaking it all about. The French want to
be loyal Europeans until they have to suffer. And the Germans want to
run the show, while telling everyone else they are variously lazy,
economically sick, or obsessed with the Second World War.In fact, what we are seeing now is the British multicultural disaster on a grand scale. Greeks, Italians and Spaniards do not want to be Dutch, English or German. French Trade Unionists detest l’Anglo-Saxonisme, German bankers are grumpy on the subject of French State largesse, and the British think all foreigners are intrinsically funny.
So I have to laugh when I see quotes from Angela Merkel about how absolutely vital it is that the eurozone should survive, because without the euro there is no future for a united Europe:
“We seem to find common solutions when we are staring over the abyss. But as soon as the pressure eases, people say they want to go their own way. We need to be ready to accept that Europe has the last word in certain areas. Otherwise we won’t be able to continue to build Europe.” (21st April 2013)
“I would like to recall a leitmotif today, a mainspring of European integration, namely the freedom that opens the way for a life in peace and prosperity. It is this freedom in all its facets – freedom of expression, of the media, belief and assembly – that we have to work tirelessly to defend. Without freedom there can be no rule of law. Without freedom there can be no diversity and no tolerance. Freedom is the foundation for the united and determined Europe….the Nobel Peace Prize is a mandate for us all to create a better EU together – a Europe marked by strength and stability….” (7th November, 2012)
Compare and contrast that hypocritical bollocks with what Fraulein Stasi DDR Youth Leader 1972 said three years ago about multiculturalism in Germany:
“Of course, the approach to build a multicultural society and to live side-by-side and to enjoy each other… has failed, utterly failed.” (17th October 2010)
Ah, right then: so multiculturalism doesn’t work in Germany, but it must work in Europe. That is, I think, a slight case of double standards.
Unless, of course, one starts from the assumption that unsere grosse Geli doesn’t want multiculturalism in Europe any more than she wants it in Germany. For being an unreformed command economy Stalinist, she is a great believer in One Size Fits All. “You can haff any Kultur you like as long as it iss German.” Right-ho.
Think I’m being a little hard on the “I demand custody of the fridge” woman? Then read this direct quote, unedited, from what preceded her ‘utter failure’ speech in 2010:
“At the beginning of the 60s our country called the foreign workers to come to Germany and now they live in our country. We kidded ourselves a while, we said: ‘They won’t stay, sometime they will be gone’, but this isn’t reality.”
Niyeeece, my little Stasi-Schnitzel…really nyeeece….they live in our country: “You vill komm work here und zen you vill go away”. Hmm. Brings back memories of another time, in ze olden golden days of ze Reich, venn all voss gut and ze Führer knew how to work ze Untermenschen hard. “Please work very hard for very little, and then f**k off”. Now at last I understand the meaning of Arbeit macht frei: “You are free to leave Germany…in fact, I insist on it”.
How the blindly pc can dismiss my continuing criticism of the German political class’s inbuilt superiority complex as bigotry is beyond human understanding. I haven’t made any of this up. I didn’t invent anything about Merkel’s DDR past, her father’s rabidly pro-Hoeneker views, her instant conversion to democracy after the Wall came down, or the lady’s ruthless demolition of every rival in the way of her route to the Chancellery. Similarly, I am not now spinning how the German Chancellor switches her line of argument by 180 degrees if that means maintaining her leadership of both Germany and Europe: go to the records, examine the quotes. This is empirical reality, not propaganda.
The bottom line is that I do agree with Angela Merkel: multicultural Tower of Babel bollocks is never going to work. But she is one of those politicians with whom the very thing you agree about one week will be the thing you disagree about the next week. Because that’s the way Geli is: she will say whatever is necessary to maintain power. Power is the one commodity that both she, Schäuble, and all the other Brussels gargoyles value. Nothing else matters.
So to sum up: either Angela Merkel is a totally consistent one-size centralising Deutschland über Alles Reichmeister racist; or she is a hypocritical, horse-switching euro-integrationist who wants everyone else to conform to one model.
She’s one or the other: you can’t have it both ways. But it’s not much of a choice, is it? Seems to me like the European Union is a game in which 27 countries take part….and then the Germans win.
Stand by for another piece later today on the somewhat distorted Germany memory when it comes to the History Thing.
