Under draconian security measures this year’s students and armed forces parades are expected to take place in Athens and Thessaloniki. Out of fear of massive protests, police has started already to set up iron barriers outside the Greek Parliament and the the Monument of Unknown Soldier right opposite Syntgama Square.The students’ parade scheduled to take place on Sunday morning, October 28th 2012, is going to be of short duration and the journalists covering it up will have to take special accreditation.Equal security measures will be implemented on Sunday in Thessaloniki, where the military parade will take place. Also of short duration of some 20 minutes as the government leaks to the media. Thousands of policemen are excepted to safeguard the politicians present at the parade while spectators will be forced to watch the parade at a distance of 100 meters.
Last year, the 28-October-military-parade in Thessaloniki was cancelled short before it began, after verbal attacks and insults to Greek President who was attending the parade.
National Oxi-Day (No-Day) celebrated on October 28th every year marks the anniversary when Greece denied access to the Axis forces in 1940.
Security measures are under way also in other Greek cities, in order to protect local or central government politicians from possible outrage of austerity-hit citizens. In some cities, like Irakleio, Crete, citizens’ groups organize a separate parade. In other, like, Naousa, Northern Greece, they plan to hold a people’s parade after the official one.
There will be special traffic regulations in major streets of downtown Athens ( click here in Greek). It’s better to avoid downtown Athens at least until 2 pm.
