21 Nobel Prize Winners Call for “Support of Greece”

“Support of Greece” is the title of an article published by Science magazine, countersigned by 21 Nobel Prize Winning scientists of the exact sciences sector.
The prominent scientists refer to the austerity measures imposed on Greece by the IMF and the EU during the past two years, which have had no positive result. The only impact of these measures, according to the scientists, is the fact that “technology, research and education were seriously damaged,” which are regarded as of crucial importance for the country’s exit from the crisis.
In addition to Harald zur Hausen, a German virologist and  director of the German Cancer Research Center, who was honored in 2008 with the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his studies on cancer that led to the vaccine against cervical cancer, the article is countersigned by 20 more Nobel Laureates, including director of the EMBL Iain Mattaj and Robert May of Oxford University, who was awarded the Royal Swedish Academy’s Crafoord Prize.

In this article, the distinguished scientists present their suggestions and ask for, among other things, provisions for investment in the Funds, in order to support innovative Greek scientific and technological programs, which could be beneficial for Greece in the short-term future.
Moreover, they ask that Greece participates in big European Organizations, such as the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, and call on investors to contribute to the collaboration of the Greek insitutions with big research centers based in Europe.
