With little else to
create any real interest, all eyes were on the relegation battle on the
final day of the Greek Superleague. (photo: Eurokinissi) |
With the four playoff places already decided and the league
title making its way to Piraeus earlier than perhaps most neutrals would
have liked, it was all eyes on the bottom of the table on Sunday, with
the Greek Superleague wrapping up its regular season.
In the end, there were few if any surprises to be found with
Kerkyra maintaining their impressive relegation beating form and staying
just above the trap door, with Ergotelis, big spenders Panaitolikos and
league punching bag Doxa Dramas falling through.
For most, Panaitolikos was the biggest surprise, considered at the
start of the campaign as the potential surprise package of the season.
In the end, the much talked about Haristeas and Camara strike force
proved far too toothless to put any real bite on the Superleague.
Interest now moves to the play-offs, with Aek Athens, cup finalists
Atromitos, PAOK and Panathinaikos preparing to scrap over the much
coveted Champions League spot, although Panathinaikos will start as
clear favorites, with a four point lead in the play off mini league.
Atromitos will hope that Saturday’s cup final with Olympiakos goes
far better than Sunday’s clash with the Piraeus side, with Ernesto
Valverde fielding what was mostly a reserve team, yet still claiming all
three points.
Youngster Yannis Fetfatzidis was once again the star attraction,
providing most of the fizz for his team and topping off a great display
with a stunning goal, a cheeky lob that left the Atromtios keeper
stranded and Olympiakos claiming a 2-0 win.
