Greek Easter Fireworks Pose Problem for Tarpon Springs, FL

Thousands of Greeks, mostly of Dodecanese origin, live in Tarpon Springs, Florida, and celebrate Easter in the traditional way. They color eggs, grill lambs and go to the Great Sunday Service with pockets full of…fireworks!
Easter firecrackers are under great discussion, though, after some Americans feel uncomfortable with such displays after September 11.
“No one knows what happens when Greek Orthodox people celebrate Easter on Holy Sunday. Holidays may be a happy period for them, gathering around with their beloved relatives. But it may also be transformed into a Greek Easter ['blast'],” comments the journalist of a local newspaper.
“At exactly 12 o’clock, home-made fireworks blow on Dodecanese Avenue. Because of the blasts, some nearby buildings get jarred and windows get broken,” continues the journalist. “What’s more, young people run all around the city with firecrackers.”
Father Michael, reverend of the Greek Orthodox church, has already asked worshippers not to make or use  any fireworks this year.
