Finally, the "overcrowding" has become persecution once again

Babibiotis decision changes 6th Grade History book

"On August 27, 1922 the Turkish army enters Smyrna. Thousands of Greeks crowded the harbor trying to get on ships and leave for Greece…". This was written in the History book under which the students in the 6th grade learned about the past of the Greek people.

This reference, like others in the book of Maria Repousi have caused anger and resentment. This is because Repousi, parliamentary candidate of the Democratic Left party on May 6, insisted on not changing the view she persistently tried to impose to thousands of students, even though it was not based on any historical event. What the chief of t he authors of the old History book treated as an "overcrowding" was the great massacre of the Greeks in Smyrna. It was the transformation of a city jewel, built by the Greeks, to ashes by the neo-Turks of Kemal.

The new History book that will be taught from the following school year to students in 6th grade, is entitled "History of the modern and contemporary world," and is written by Professors of History at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, I. Koliopoulos, Iak. Mikhailidis and teachers H. Minaoglou and A. Kalianioti.

As pointed out in a statement by the ministry of Education, following the completion of the book’s writing and the successful pilot implementation in schools, it got angot approval from the Pedagogical Institute, before it was eliminated, which recommended its printing and sending to the primary schools.
