Frost grip around the country

Wave of bad weather to last until Thursday

 
 
Polar temperatures, frost and snow comprise the weather backdrop for the country and according to the forecasts of the Meteorological Service, the new wave of bad weather is expected to last until Thursday.

Attica
Weather: overcast with sleet in the south and snow or sleet in the rest of the areas.
Temperature: 2 – 5C.

Thessaloniki
Weather: overcast with chances of light snowfall.
Temperature: -2 – 4C.

Since early in the morning, the temperature has dropped below zero in Athens while Penteli and Parnitha are still “dressed in white”. Vehicular traffic has already been banned on the Penteli ring road, from the 416 military hospital to the church of St. Peter, while vehicles in Parnitha must use chains from the cable car to the casino.

Intense frost will occur in the northern and continental parts. The eastern mainland, Evia, Sporades, eastern Aegean, Cyclades and Crete will have snow or sleet, and winds up to 9B.

Thessaloniki
Weather: overcast, increased in the morning, with chances of snow in the west.
Winds: northern-northeastern 3 – 5B.
Temperature: -5 – 3C.

Macedonia and Thrace
Weather: slightly overcast with chances of snowfall in the morning.
Winds: northern 3 – 7B.
Temperature: -6 – 4C, -12 in eastern Macedonia and Thrace, with intense frost in the continental regions.

Ionian, Epirus, the western mainland and western Peloponnisos
Weather: overcast.
Winds: eastern 4 – 8B, with a gradual decline.
Temperature: -1 – 10C, -4 – 4 in Epirus.

Thessaly, the eastern mainland, Evia and eastern Peloponnisos
Weather: overcast with light snowfall or sleet, and snow in northern Evia, the central mainland and Magnesia.
Winds: northeastern 5 – 9B, with a decrease during the night.
Temperature: -5 – 4C, 4 lower in the north.

Cyclades and Crete
Weather: rainfall or sleet in the southern lowlands and light snowfall in the rest of the regions.
Winds: northern-northeastern 6 – 8B.
Temperature: 2 – 8C.

Dodecanese and eastern Aegean
Weather: overcast with chances of snowfall in the north.
Winds: northern 5 – 8B.
Temperature: 5 – 10C in the Dodecanese, -1 – 4 in the northern Aegean.

Crete is freezing as well, expecting overcast skies with rainfall or sleet in the southern lowlands and light snowfall in the rest of its regions, northern-northeastern winds 8 – 6B, and the temperature between 2 – 8C.

Ships are docked in ports

Departure is stil prohibited from the following ports: Piraeus, Rafina, Lavrion, Nea Styra-Agia Marina and Prinos-Kavala, because of stormy winds in the high seas.

Open-type ships from Piraeus to Argosaronikos are operating normally, while dolphins reach as far as Aegina.

Which schools will remain closed and which will operate late.

Schools will remain closed in Karpenisi, Menidi, Thrakomakedones, Oropos, Porto Rafti, and the municipalities of Dirfion-Messapion, Mantoudiou and Limni-Agia Anna in Evia.

Schools in Grevena will open at 9:15, and in Komotini and Alexandroupoli at 10:00. No problems have been reported in Attica and schools will operate normally in Kastoria.

Fthiotida

- kindergarten and primary schools in Lamia will open after 10:00, while gymnasiums and lyceums will operate normally. Ypati schools will remain closed
- schools will remain closed in the municipality of Amfikleia in Elateia
- schools will remain closed in the municipality of Lokroi
- kindergarten and primary schools in Achinos and Karavomylos will remain closed
- Pelasgia schools will remain closed
- the school at Timfristos will remain closed and the rest of the schools in Makrakomi will open after 10:00 under the responsibility of their principals.

Evritania

Schools will remain closed in Karpenisi today, Tuesday, while according to information so far, all schools in the Agrafa municipality remain open.

Viotia

In the municipality of Thiva schools will remain closed in: Loutoufi, Melissochori, Plataies, Kapareli and Lefktra due to snowfall and frost. Schools in Ellopia, Ksironomi, Domvraina, Disvi, Xrostia and Vagia will open at 9:30.

Schools in the city of Thiva will remain open.

The general Secretariat for Civil Protection issued an urgent bulletin warning for a temporary worsening of the weather:

1. further drop of temperature and frost mainly in the continental regions, quite intense in the north
2. stormy winds in the eastern high seas reaching 9B and decreasing on Wednesday morning (1-2-12)
3. light snowfall in eastern Epirus and the islands and more intense in northern Evia, the central mainland and Magnesia
4. heavier snowfall in the west from Wednesday afternoon (1-2-12), which by Thursday (2-2-12) morning will move to the rest of the central and northern continental regions mainly
5. light snowfall for Attica, mainly in the north and east.
