Thousands of Greek employees did not receive Christmas bonus this
year, even though it is obligatory according to the law. The Labour
Control Authority received more than 2,000 complaints by employees who
didn’t receive their bonuses, equal to one month salary. A large number
of employers justified the non-payment of the bonus with ‘economic
difficulties’. At the same time, a court in Athens had ruled that the
bonus in private sector could be paid until December 31st and not
December 21st as the law provides.Private sector union GSEE demands the punishment of law-breakers and intensive controls by the Labour Authority.
The Christmas bonus would give a rescue economic shot to thousands of employees in Greece where many do not even receive properly their salaries. For the last five months a friend of mine has been receiving just €200 per month instead of her salary of €1,100. Others have not been paid since six months or more.
Those receiving regularly their salary, used their Christmas bonus to pay the emergency property tax and the solidarity tax.
