Six out of ten extra employees to be put into reserve

Mossialos' statements over the measures

Details on how the work reserve will be applied were given by Mr. Elias Mosialos today during an informal briefing to reporters.

Mr. Mossialos stated that 10% of the workers in the public sector which will be determined as overstaffed will be moved to other places also within the wider public sector. Up to 30% will sign fixed-term contracts while 60% will go into reserve. Mr. Mossialos stated that government will expect significant wage effects both through reserve employment as well as the single payroll. He also signified that ERT will also pass through the evaluation stage.

The spokesperson clarified that there will be no issue of exiting the Eurozone while he does not believe that there will be any problem with the sixth installment and that government is committed to structural changes, and as such he mentioned the example of the reduction in profit rates of pharmacists, in fuel smuggling and control of supplementary pensions.

“We will not jeopardize the implementation of the July 21st Agreement”, was the message he wanted to send to all those who reacted.

As for what Health Minister Andreas Loverdos said yesterday on one million public servants afflicting the remaining ten, Mr. Mosialos commented that Mr. Loverdos gave a general context and noted that there is no intra-government dissent. He added that we are largely a state-economy and that the government is aiming for a flexible, productive private sector. He concluded that “the total output is not desirable”.

Finally, he described the context in which the prime minister will speak in Thessaloniki. Mr. Papandreou will present where the country stands today, will describe reforms, growth patterns, government initiatives, lawfulness and social justice. Mr. Papandreou’s speech will be condensed in the slogan of “we are against shady interests, not society”.
