Papandreou: "We are in a situation similar to war." Pay!

Additional measures if we are not consistent, says the PM

During the press conference in Thessaloniki, PM George Papandreou said that the country is in a situation similar to war.

Asked about the constant announcements of measures, he said: "If the country was at war wouldn’t we ask the Greeks to pay for guns? Our current position is similar to war!"…

Answering another question he even clarified that "if we are not consistent in our commitments, there will always be corrections." He spoke of the need to make an extra effort to help us maintain what we decide and that our sacrifices are well spent, stressing that there is no other path than the one we are following.

"We are very close to turning over a new leaf," he said, reiterating the importance of achieving primary budget surpluses and stating he is determined to proceed with the required changes.

Asked about the communication he had with the president of the New Republic Antonis Samaras, he said that he still believes there is need for political consensus, necessary to get the country out of this crisis. "There are members of the New Republic who believe in this," he said, adding that it cannot be done by co-governing or by new elections."

Asked by "PROTO THEMA" journalist Yannis Makrygiannis, regarding whether pensions and salaries for September and October are secured, he diplomatically answered that this is the aim of the government and its continuing effort.
