Appeals court acquits Kenteris, Thanou

A lower-level court had originally found the two champion sprinters guilty of lying about a motorbike accident prior to the 2004 Olympic Games in order to avoid a doping test, along with their coach, seven doctors at Kat hospital and two eye-witnesses of the accident.

According to the public prosecutor on the bench, who proposed acquittal, there was insufficient evidence brought before the court that the fall from the motorbike had not actually occurred in order to support the charge.

The appeal court upheld a guilty charge against their coach Christos Tzekos for possession of controlled substances, reducing a prison sentence of 33 months to 12 months suspended for three years.
