Rhodes, Crete and Serifos were all affected by the fires, Greek Reporter reports. The fires have struck at the height of the summer tourist season and saw a number of villages being evacuated of locals and tourists.
A combination of hot and dry weather and high winds led to the fires spreading and becoming dangerous.
A state of emergency has been declared in the municipal units of South Rhodes and Lindos by the General Secretary for Civil Protection, says Greek Reporter, adding that more than 30,000 acres of forest land have been burned since the fire broke out in Rhodes.
These photographs show inhabitants and holidaymakers leaving the village of Megalo Livadi on Greece’s Aegean island of Serifos due to the wildfires.
