HOUSE
SPEAKER Yiannakis Omirou has warned that Cyprus is in danger of coming
across a new solution plan on the parameters of the Anan plan, rejected
in 2004 by the majority of the Greek Cypriots.
“The danger of a solution plan on the parameters of the Anan plan is real” Omirou warned.
Omirou
said that Cyprus must stick to its targets and principles and pointed
out that “it is our duty to insist on a solution that guarantees the
unity of the state, the fundamental freedoms and the rights of its
people and at the same time the withdrawal of the Turkish troops and
settlers.”
“We are neither negative, nor dismissive” Omirou said,
blaming Turkey for the stalemate in the Cyprus talks of the past five
years.
The House President rejected attempts by foreign circles
to press Cyprus to accept a political settlement, taking advantage of
the current economic downturn and called for unity on the domestic
front.
The latest round of UN-backed talks was suspended in July
2012 as a result of Turkey’s reaction to the fact that Cyprus assumed
the EU presidency between July and December 2012. It is expected that
talks between the two Cypriot communities will resume in the autumn.
