This must be the joke in the
history of Nobel Prize. Crisis-torn European Union won the Nobel Peace
Prize for 2012, ‘for its historic role in uniting the continent’.
Unless the Nobel Prize committee members had a sudden attack of a
cynicism, KTG would say that Barroso, Van Rompuy & Co deserve to win
the prize for a single reason: Living peacefully in their bubbles while
many European Citizens, especially those in the South, live in
conditions that violate the EU human rights standards and conventions.
In Greece and Portugal, in Spain and Ireland in the North, where social
cohesion is breaking apart, the social welfare is collapsing, the needy
cannot cover basic needs and the poor with less than 6,000 euro annual
income get taxed. But that’s history on the making and ‘social peace’
has nothing to do with the Nobel Prize standards.“The Nobel Peace Prize Committee announces its 2012 winner on Friday with prize watchers favouring dissidents from Russia and Belarus or religious leaders working on Muslim-Christian reconciliation.I just heard a weird dry sound. It must have come from the bones of Alfred Nobel as he is turning into his grave.
“It was a unanimous decision and it was not particularly complicated,” Thorbjoern Jagland, the head of the selection committee, told the Aftenposten newspaper.
Jagland said that the winner, decided several weeks ago, is generally known to the public and the decision could generate some controversy.
“I expect that there will be some debate, we hope there will be,” Jagland told broadcaster TV2.
The committee received 231 nominations this year, including 43 organisations. It usually narrows the list to between 25 and 35 names at its first meeting to weigh candidates.
Other betting sites favoured Afghan women’s rights leader Sima Samar.” (Full article Here)

Below the joint statement by Barroso and Van Rompuy:
“It is a tremendous honour for the European Union to be awarded the 2012 Nobel Peace
Prize.
This Prize is the strongest possible recognition of the deep political motives behind our
Union: the unique effort by ever more European states to overcome war and divisions and
to jointly shape a continent of peace and prosperity. It is a Prize not just for the project and
the institutions embodying a common interest, but for the 500 million citizens living in our
Union.
At its origins the European Union brought together nations emerging from the ruins of
devastating World Wars – which originated on this continent – and united them in a project
for peace. Over the last sixty years, the European Union has reunified a continent split by
the Cold War around values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality,
the rule of law and respect for human rights.
These are also the values that the European Union promotes in order to make the world a
better place for all. The European Union will continue to promote peace and security in the
countries close to us and in the world at large. We are proud that the European Union is the
world’s largest provider of development assistance and humanitarian aid and is at the
forefront of global efforts to fight climate change and promote global public goods.
This Nobel Peace Prize shows that in these difficult times the European Union remains an
inspiration for leaders and citizens all over the world.”PS the next prize is an Oscar for Best Comedy ever…
