Dozens of Greeks are housed in temporary centres for stay in Australia, writes Ethnos newspaper, citing a Greek media on the island continent and clarifies that the data have not yet been confirmed by official Australian authorities. These are people who go there as tourists, but remain in Australia to look for work and to live there permanently. At the first opportunity, they are sent back to Greece.
Recently, the number of Greeks departing to Australia has risen sharply - tourists, immigrants, holders of dual citizenship. The country has strengthened the control at airports and in addition for a return ticket, the authorities check for sufficient funds for the stay there, as well as an address where entering people will be staying. If they cannot specify any of these requirements or is someone who enters the county candidly admits that he or she is coming to seek employment, the immigration authorities do not allow them to enter the country and sebd them back to Greece on the next flight.
The authorities are checking the documents of tourists who are already in the country as well, and if their visas have expired, they place them in temporary residence centres before exporting them back to Greece. In the last few days alone, in Melbourne, over 20 Greeks have been housed in such centres. Of course, this applies to all foreigners, not just to Greeks, because Australia implements a very strict immigration policy.
