According to the report, more than 120,000 illegal immigrants cross the Greek Turkish borders per year, due to the high numbers of immigrants, mostly from Africa, in neighboring Istanbul, who manage to be granted a visa but when it expires, cross the border as they do not have the money needed or the documents to travel to other countries legally.
Mayor of Soufli, Evangelos Poulilios, states that there is “an organized human-trafficking system,” and adds that the “immigrants’ main road to Europe is Greece.” But the Greek mayor disapproves of FRONTEX policy of the EU. He marks it as “an EU’s spy doing nothing to help Greece and just documents clues and numbers without ever halting illegal border crossing.”
On the contrary, the police deputy of Evros George Kalaitzis says “the help we have from FRONTEX is really important,” as it expedites the identification process of illegal migrants and makes clear that those coming from countries at war have a deadline of 30 days to leave the country. He also stresses that the high number of illegal immigrants is a cause of great concern to Greece and Europe, as they keep increasing.
