“Australia is currently not negotiating with Greece on signing a Holiday Working Visa intergovernmental agreement.”The statement was made by the Australian Ambassador in Athens, Jenny
Bloomfield, and is expected to provoke angry reactions, since there had
been the impression –created by both nations – that the respective
agreement was soon to be signed.Speaking to the “Neos Kosmos”, J. Bloomfield referred to the
immigration issue, repeating that the number of Greeks migrating to
Australia is trivial. She also pointed out the need for improvement of
the commercial and cultural relations of the two nations.
“Despite the fact, that there had been an increasing interest in
Australian immigration programs, that was not interpreted to show some
significant increase of the number of applications filed for Permanent
Working Visa”, she explained.
Ambassador Bloomfield also noted that the two nations work closely
together on the shipping sector; Greek ships transport Australian export
products –especially related to the energy and mineral sectors – in
Asian and other important markets, thus contributing to Australia’s
prosperity.
