Greece’s Dimitrios Chondrokoukis won the world indoor men’s high jump title at the World Track and Field Championship in Istanbul on Sunday.
Chondrokoukis managed a best of 2.33 metres and won on countback from Russian Andrey Silnov. Another Russian, Ivan Ukhov, took bronze with a best of 2.31m.
The 24-year-old Olympiakos athlete registered a new personal record, upsetting the event’s favorites to win his first major honors on the global stage.
Chondrokoukis’s was the eighth medal in the country’s history in the world indoor championships, and the fourth gold.
