Freezing Greece in the Clamp of Frost; -24°C in Florina

An icy cold weather front with freezing temperatures has reached Greece from Poland, with many areas in the north of the country being in the grip of frost. In Florina, western Macedonia, schools are closed on Monday, as the thermometer shows 24 degrees Celsius below zero. In Grevena, Kastoria and Kozani, schools opened an hour later than usual due to the frozen roads.
In the city of Prolemaida, where the biggest power producing factory is located, the power stream that supplies the city with heating has been damaged. It is the fourth damage withing the last 10 days, with Prolemaida having average temperatures of -6 degrees Celsius.
In Ioannina temperature fell at -3° C and in Larissa at -2°C.

At 10.30 this morning temperature in the southern suburbs of Athens was at 5 degrees above zero, despite the shining sun and the clear sky. Temperatures in Greece’s capital are expected to be between zero and +6 degrees C, while snow may fall on Monday night in the northern suburbs.
Weather forecast warns of strong frost at night on Greece’s mainland and a total frost in Northern Greece.
In Eastern and Southern Greece, rain, sleet and snow in the mountainous areas are expected.
Winds will blow with 6 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea, and 5 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea.
Tuesday, january 17/2012 is expected to be the coldest day.
